The Poetry-to-Comics Challenge

The Poetry-to-Comics Challenge will be open to six (6) cartoonists. Briefly, this challenge is an experiment in how comics works as a language for adapting non-narrative text. Artists will chose from a short selection of poems, oratory, or song lyrics to adapt and/or re-envision as a comic. Some relevant examples—such as the one above—will be shown and, prior to beginning the challenge, a brief presentation will be given touching on some of the goals and pitfalls of comics as a medium for poetry adaptation.

Although most of the 24Hour comics challenges focus on black & white cartooning for the sake of expediency, this experiment is excellent for artists who wish to work in color.

DRAWING EXPERIENCE PREFERRED;

– moderate and above

TIME REQUIREMENTS;

– as the original text to be adapted can vary in length, no time requirement is set for this experiment (other than the 24hours). Participants registering for this workshop should tell us their availability for the weekend so others might have a chance to join in as seats become open.

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT PROVIDED;

– a small selection of poems, lyrics and texts to choose from. You are, however, encouraged to bring a text of your own choosing for adaptation (Note: it must NOT be an original work and should be relatively well-known)

– access to a laptop and large format (11X17in) scanner that utilizes Comiclife and photoshop (if needed, some hands-on assistance can be provided in using each of these programs)

– layout bond paper

MATERIALS REQUIRED;

– Whatever material for drawing is most comfortable for the artist. Paper size should not exceed 11X17in and any painting material should be watercolor (not acrylic) for speed and easy clean-up. For further discussion of materials, participants should email Rob Berry: robberry237@gmail.com
